Introduction
Thing 1 will introduce you to the program, ask you to take a short digital skills analysis through All Aboard, and introduce yourself in the comments.
Familiarise yourself with the program:
- Read About
- Read the Frequently Asked Questions
- Have a look at the 23 Things we will be exploring through the program
- Where to get Help
You can read more about how the 23 Things program works in ‘More Detail’ below, then take a look at the activities under ‘Try’ and finally, share your thoughts and comments with us under ‘Share’. Each week will follow this same format.
Try
All Aboard is an Irish project that aims to empower learners, teachers, and anyone who uses technology to support their work, their study, or other aspects of living in a digital age.
The website includes a tool to discover your digital confidence profile. Click on the image below for more information and to take the profile assessment. This site is sometimes a little slow to load, but is worth the wait. Allow 30 – 40 minutes to complete the profile assessment.
It will be helpful to complete this activity now and at the end of the program to compare results.
More Detail
Co-designed by CDU staff and run by the Education Strategy Team, this program seeks to expose you to a range of digital tools for your personal and professional development as a researcher, academic, or professional. The aim is for you to choose a little time each week to expand your digital literacy.
Digital literacy is the ability to identify and use technology confidently, creatively and critically to effectively meet the demands and challenges of living, learning and working in a digital society.

The program is structured to be presented across 23 weeks with a blog post each week introducing one Thing. Anyone can participate in 23 Digital Things by reading through the content and completing a task. We encourage participants to register a blog with us (as part of Thing 3) to share short blog posts about each of the 23 Things they complete. Blogging provides a space to share your learning and results of tasks, to interact with other participants to offer support and advice and a space for reflection. The blog also serves as a collection of artefacts to demonstrate your learning, and as evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Follow along online, join in and share with your own blog, come along to our face-to-face drop-in sessions across the CDU campuses, or join an online webinar.
Read through the following documents.
If you are not affiliated with Charles Darwin University, have a look to see if your own university or employer have social media guidelines or policies in place.

The “Try” activity didn’t really provide me with any new learning, however the questioning did encourage me to think about what I should try to learn next.
Cheers
Hi Tony, thanks for joining in and getting your thinking cap on.
All Aboard looks like a good entry point. Just completed the first module — a tad slow at loading
Hi Jon, Yes the allaboard website is slow in loading for everyone. Thanks for coming onboard!
Good start with profile reflecting what I’ve always suspected which means I’m looking forward the other things
However I did have to use the laptop rather than the iphone as the load wasn’t going ahead as it did here
I understood it’s slow but I found that on the phone the blue arrow wasn’t responsive (in that it didn’t go round and round etc) and if after multiple clicks and moved forward, wasn’t sure I was on the right page or it skipped ahead. Page numbers would have allowed me to monitor that more effectively.
But, on the laptop, all worked well!
I did a 23Things program back in 2011! Still have my blog. Don’t think I’ll have as much time to commit this time round but will be interesting to see the change in 23 Things over those 8 years! OK, so I’m comfortable in all domains and looking forward to learning some new things! Great opportunity. I could very easily get distracted at one or more stations on All Aboard, but I’ll definately come back and take a look.
Good to have you with us Alicia. There’ll be a variety of activities each week, so the time commitment is very much an individual choice – and hopefully some of them will be a bit of fun too. There’s lots of good tips in the All Aboard program as well, and it’s a work in progress, so growing all the time.
Looking forward to seeing this progress. I like the layout of All Aboard with different stations and stops. Tried a couple of modules and learnt a few things. Would be interested to see how people at beginner levels of digital literacy navigate the site and whether they can learn from it.
Marie here, from Curtin Library Makerspace in Perth 🙂 Excited to learn with you all – We plan to launch a smaller pilot next Semester. Will be interested to see if my Digital Profile changes any at the end of the course – I’m currently rating myself as ‘comfortable’ in all areas…
Welcome Jaemie,
Good to hear you found Thing 1 helpful. We introduced several staff in Alice to All Aboard some time ago and they found it helpful too. It could easily be used in a more supported program for absolute beginners.
I have some things in mind for that too 🙂
There is so much assumed knowledge and so much required knowledge to do our job that it would be good to get a bit of direction in the important areas. Also, it seems that the technology requirements continue to grow so really I have to keep working on it.
I found Thing1 to be a good opportunity to reflect on where I am at in regards to my digital capabilities, and the areas in which I would like to develop further over the months ahead. I’m also from Curtin University Library (like Marie who commented above), so thanks for enabling us to tag along!
Hi Karen, thanks for joining in! Further reflection is coming up in Thing 8 and Thing 23 as well. Get your blog ready!
I wrote a blog post in 2018 as a result of a few people completing the All Aboard activity. Read it here: http://blog.ascilite.org/focus-on-literacies/. In particular, I like this comment “It is not necessary for me to be Confident in every area. I need to know who to ask and how to learn quickly when needed.”
Hi.
I am based off campus, in Brisbane. I am new to CHarles darwin University and would like to expand my skills and creativity in teaching in an online environment. I found the platform loaded smoothly on my laptop. The self reflective evaluation has helped me identify where my learning needs exist. I look forward to learning 23 things about digital literacy.
Thanks for the opportunity to try some new tools and develop digital literacy skills. I am based at Casuarina campus and work in a client support role. The activity allowed me to assess my own confidence in a range of areas so look forward to building on this throughout the program.
Hi Bernie,
Good to have you join us on this journey. And that’s great that you’ve been able to identify some areas to build your confidence.
Dear Jon,
This is a drawback of using the Articulate Storyline Software. I have created 1400 activities using this software and I have been working with Techincal support from this company to find a feasible solution for the loading issue.
Kind regards,
Denis
Hello all – I have jut returned from a holiday and discovered Things. I hope that (a) it’s not too late to participate and (b) I am not too old to learn. I avoided online learning like the plague … as my CDU colleagues would remember. Now I am a lead trainer and assessor delivering the Certificate IV TAE mostly online as well as face to face. But I seriously want to explore learning through online in more depth and I am hoping that Things will do this. And the self-reflection tells me I definitely need to.
Hi Chris, definitely not too late to participate. Welcome to 23 Things. Our motto is ‘spend a little time each week to improve your digital literacy’. You’ve made a good start by sharing your reasons for being here and reflecting a little.
Welcome Chris!
Never too old to learn! I hope you find 23 Things helpful. We’ve just published Thing 23, so whilst the facilitated mode is now officially complete, Wendy and I will continue to monitor the site and you can reach us through the comments section of each Thing, via email, or through the social media channels you’ll learn about as you work through the program – Twitter is a great way to communicate with us.
Enjoy!
Sue
I am undertaking this course to improve my knowledge and hopefully be able to help others.
Welcome Janine,
Our 23 Things program was facilitated through 2019 as we released a new Thing each week. The full program is now available for you to dip into the Things that interest you. Feel free to post in the comments or reach out to us through Twitter @23ThingsCDU

I find the try activity quite interesting because it investigates the entry level of the participants. I believe joining the program will help me bridge the digital gap i tend to have and also improve my networking with colleagues.

It is good to have my own Digital Literacy profile before and after the program to compare what we have learnt during the program. I feel comfortable in the Find & Use part as I am a Librarian 🙂 and I am from Vietnam, Hello everybody. I hope that I can improve other skills when I complete the course.
As a lecturer of LIS, from HUC Vietnam, I look forward to expanding knowledge and experience in learning with such a self-study digital literacy program. I am now feeling happy and grateful with the chance to know and join in the program. Hopefully, at the end of this program, my expanded knowledge and experience will lead on to improved lectures that benefit HUC students.
Hello. My name is Hieu. I am a librarian at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City – VNUHCM). I was recommended to join this program. I find the website simple design and beautiful images. The content of things 1 matches what I’m doing with my library.
Hello everybody. My name is Loan. It’s a such fantastic program as its updated information for librarians. However, I feel a little bit confused for registering many apps. This activity takes more time and I have to provide my personal information for these apps. Sorry for my unpleasant comments. It is more interesting if learners only do at just one-point. Thanks.
Dear all,
I’m Chau, from University of Economics, HCMC, Vietnam. My colleagues and I have been encouraged to participate in this program. We would like to build an environment that facilitates knowledge creation and sharing in our community.
Try activity helped me review my skills set. I am keen on learning and improving my ability of communication and collaboration.
Thank you and I look forward to interaction with instructors and other learners.
Hey guys! I’m Hien from the University of Economics HCMC Library, Vietnam. It’s such a good thing to be here with y’all digital professionals and have a chance to dig down into some new good stuff about this digital-driven age. I hope that we can explore and grab up something great after this program.
